Last year on July 4, Captain Jesse Rose stopped at PJs Family Restaurant on Route 6 in Wellfleet, where he worked as a teenager.
“He gave us some minced clams for our chowder,” said owner Brian Reeves, who has known Rose for decades. “We were having such a hard time finding good product, we tasted it and were like, ‘Woah, that’s legit!’
“We dumped everything else,” Reeves said with a laugh. “His clams are way more tender, and definitely sweeter.”
Capitol Hill Ocean Week in Washington DC, held earlier this month, focused on leadership, and when it comes to addressing challenges posed by climate change the right kind of leaders matter.
“Climate action (should be) led by people in boots, not people in suits,” offered Sarah Schumann, who fishes in Rhode Island and Alaska.
Schumann, part of the ‘Leaders at the Helm of Climate-Ready Fisheries,’ said environmentalism has changed from a cause to a career: Decisions on how to address the existential threat are too often made by people who aren’t made “uncomfortable” by climate change, rather than those who experience impacts every day.
Hatch’s Fish Market in Wellfleet has a basement smoker with a pipe through the roof, and on certain summer days the cloying scent of sunscreen in town is replaced with a savory, maple-wood, campfire smell.
“The smoke goes all through the town,” said Tom Smith, Captain of F/V Sea Wolf.
The smell of bluefish on the smoker is so good that people are drawn to the Main Street fish and produce market, a stone’s throw from town hall.
“I call him the Pied Piper,” Smith said of Adrien Kmiec, who owns the popular spot.

The summer is heating up and piers across the Cape are bustling as commercial fishermen pick up more crew to take advantage of growing demand and – fingers crossed – long stretches of good weather.
