Feedback Needed on Temporary Scientific Moorings in Nantucket Sound
There are two proposed studies on growing sugar kelp in Nantucket Sound. The researchers have requested feedback from the fishing community to ensure that the mooring locations will not interfere with normal fishing operations and are trying to site them near "hangs" that are generally avoided. They would consider other nearby sites that may be near "hangs" that draggers and others might avoid anyway- please provide any suggestions.
Please let us know if you have concerns about whether any of these moorings might interfere with your fishing practices.
Researchers are proposing to install a temporary mooring with a 100-150m vertical line of sugar kelp extending from the anchor to a surface buoy with a lit highflyer atop in Nantucket Sound. The proposed moorings would be installed June 1-Nov 1 and can be seen in the chart below.
Please consider the two sites they are considering for the deployment:
East option: 40 13.600' N, 70 51.700' W
West option: 40 13.600' N, 70 54.300' W
Near the Cape Wind meteorological tower.
Seasonal deployment of the kelp farm/mooring would be Oct 2017- May 2018.
Please review the chart below for exact location.
