Sea Scallop
Disentangling Recruitment and Growth Dynamics of the Atlantic Sea Scallop
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will be collecting environmental and scallop samples to better understand recruitment and growth dynamics of sea scallops. Fishermen’s Alliance is coordinating fishermen particiation and managing RSA quota leasing.
Sea Scallop Image-Based Research Fleet
This RSA project with Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation and New England Marine Monitoring is designed to develop a fishery-dependent data collection system to contribute data to sea scallop management. CFRF is the lead on this project and more information is available on their project website.
Sea Scallop Growth & Reproduction Research to Support Improved Resource Management
LAGC fishermen bring 25 live scallops to the dock weekly, where they are processed in the Fishermen’s Alliance lab to collect gonad stage and morphometric data, including shell size, wet and dried weights for meat, gonads, viscera and shells. Data was analyzed by Coonamessett Farm Foundation and data requests should be directed to them. Field work occured in FY22-23.

Monkfish
Fishermen’s Alliance, in collaboration with Dr. Steve Cadrin at SMAST and Southern New England Monkfish fishermen, are utilizing FY23-24 research set aside (RSA) Days-At-Sea (DAS) to develop standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) indices for the commercial directed monkfish gillnet fishery and possibly the multispecies trawl fishery to be used for stock assessment purposes. We will work cooperatively with the commercial monkfish fishing industry and regional scientists to accomplish four objectives:
- obtain fishery data and develop CPUE Standardization,
- collaborate with monkfish fishermen throughout the region to elicit expertise on monkfish CPUE,
- contribute CPUE series for upcoming Monkfish Stock Assessments, and
- manage Monkfish RSA Days at Sea (DAS).

Cape Cod Oceanographic Research Fleet
Tracking Local Ocean Conditions Through a New Partnership with the Fishing Community to Support Sustainable Cape Cod Fisheries on a Changing New England Shelf
In partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Fishermen’s Alliance, Cape Cod fishermen are collecting oceanographic data to document year-to-year variability in temperature and salinity of the Outer Cape Coastal Current (OCCC). Fishing vessels provide real- time data to document the changes taking place, including seasonal warming and cooling, and onshore movements of Warm Core Rings (rotating ocean eddies comprised of warm, salty water from the Gulf Stream).

eMOLT Temperature Depth Sensors
Fishermen’s Alliance is a partner on the NEFSC and Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation’s eMOLT Program. This program provides temperature depth and/or dissolved oxygen sensors that are deployed on your fishing gear; when your gear hits the deck, you see the data readout in the wheelhouse! The data is also automatically uploaded via cellular data when you are in port and is available to scientists within 72 hours to inform ocean and weather models. eMOLT is expanding and we need you!
