(Chatham, Mass...January 24, 2017) The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance debuts a new community radio show called, “Voices from the Wheelhouse” beginning this Sunday, January 29, at noon in collaboration with WOMR 92.1 FM and WFMR 91.3 FM. This monthly series of 30-minute radio broadcasts brings the real-life experiences and personal perspectives of fishermen to a broad audience.

Cape Cod Fisheries Trust Director Seth Rolbein, an award-winning documentary filmmaker on National Public Television and independent radio producer on National Public Radio, will have conversations with fishermen onboard their boats, on the waterfront, in working harbors ... in the wheelhouse.

“Our fishermen contribute much more than great fresh seafood in our markets and restaurants, they develop sustainable fishing practices, work to protect our oceans, and provide Cape Cod seafood to hungry families in need,” says Rolbein. “Their stories, their voices, their lives, connect us to both a historic past and a healthy future.”

The small-boat fishing fleet of Cape Cod is the key historic and economic connection to the genesis and heart of our communities. It remains a vital way of life, though challenged by everything from depleted fish populations to climate change to regulatory demands --- as well as misunderstanding. The men and women who face those challenges also face nature, trip by trip, catch by catch. This program provides a forum for them to talk about their lives on the water, sharing fish tales, insights, frustrations and hopes for tomorrow and the next generation.

As the farm-local food movement grows in strength, so too, should the fish-local movement. Fishermen’s Alliance communications director Nancy Civetta will share recipes featuring the seafood the fishermen catch at the end of each episode. The recipes are available at capecodfishermen.org/recipes. The half-hour episodes can be listened to as podcasts at any time here.

“Voices from the Wheelhouse” is co-produced by the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance, a place where fishermen in small boats come up with big ideas, and WOMR 92.1 and WFMR 91.3, Outermost and Furthermost Radios, the soul and spirit of Cape Cod.

Funding for this program is provided in part by grants from Cultural Councils in the towns of Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Harwich, Orleans, Sandwich, Truro and Wellfleet, and by the Dennis Arts and Cultural Council and the Mid-Cape Cultural Council, local agencies supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
