Tom Smith grew up in Orleans, fishing on charter boats out of Rock Harbor. After high school, he spent a couple of years in Florida and learned a new way to use gillnets, called strike netting. He returned to the Cape and began to strike net for bluefish, pioneering this method in the region. He is now the last strike netter in Massachusetts and also fishes for bluefin tuna in the fall.
"Bluefish are a success story. Fishermen stay within their limits, and the management plan worked to rebuild populations three years earlier than predicted."
