Small Schooling Fish
Herring and other small schooling fish are crucial to the ocean ecosystem because they provide food for larger fish and marine mammals. Yet vast quantities of these forage fish are removed by large-scale trawlers with detrimental ripple effects.
Cape Cod fishermen are waging a campaign to improve oversight of the industrial midwater trawl herring fishery. Together, we are working to get important new procedures implemented so we understand exactly what these ships catch. We want observers to monitor every trip they make, we want more herring left in the ocean to serve as food for predators, and we want a buffer zone to protect the inshore marine ecosystem and small-boat fishing businesses.
