Scallop Bycatch Research
Scallop fishermen inevitably catch small amounts of bottom-dwelling species, primarily flounders, when fishing. With support from the Fund, Cape Cod's day-boat scallopers working the Atlantic side from Provincetown to Harwich are participating in a research project that tracks when and where they encounter these fish.
Using a protocol developed by researchers at UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Science and Technology, the fishermen are gathering data that measures the movements of the bycatch species (flounder) over time. The work is expected to continue for at least two more years and is laying the groundwork for new strategies to avoid flounder.
