Monkfish Framework 10 Published as Final Rule
On July 12, the final rule for Framework Adjustment 10 to the monkfishery was published for immediate implementation. Because of local fishermens' input in the process, the total allowable landings increased 1% in the southern fisheries management area and 8% in the northern. In addition to this, the southern trip limit increased between 75 and 90 pounds for category A-D permits: days-at-sea increased by 5, bringing the total to 37. Many local fishermen signed a letter to monkfish committee chair Vincent Balzano asking for these increases. This is a great illustration of local fishermen voice having an impact on the management process!
The Fishermen’s Alliance is currently following many other actions including skate, scallop, groundfish and herring at the council, and are asking our fishermen members to share their ideas. Please make time to stop by the office, give us a call or come to a meeting to tell us your thoughts. Together, we can make a difference!
