Barndoor Skate Research Efforts
In spring 2014, a small group of Cape Cod commercial fishermen received an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to catch barndoor skates which was extended to the end of 2015.
This is an unparalleled opportunity for our fleet to be directly involved in all levels of the management of this rebounding fishery. Through this permit, our fishermen are collecting valuable biological and economic information that will help scientists, managers, and fishermen better understand barndoor skate populations in the region and shape future management strategies.
Participating Cape Cod commercial fishermen have collected data on nearly 500 barndoor skates in 2014 and are excited to gather more information over the course of 2015. This data will provide a comprehensive picture of their current population levels. We are excited to be a part of this important collaborative research and look forward to providing credible, relevant science that can inform current and future fishery management.
