A Success Story for the Groundfish Fleet
Pictured above is Chatham fisherman Tim Linnell, F/V Perry's Pride II who voiced his concerns, along with other fishermen, elected officials and community supporters, to help keep fishing businesses on Cape Cod afloat!
Finally, a piece of good news for the Cape's groundfish fleet.
Earlier this year, the last remaining money from the federal groundfish disaster relief fund was slated to be distributed to a very small group of fishermen based on exclusive qualifying criteria. The criteria left out many Cape Cod fishermen who are still struggling with the repercussions of the collapse of the cod fishery.
But fishermen gathered a team together and worked hard—with phone calls, emails and personal appeals—to make their opinions known to elected officials and state decision-makers. This fall, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries realigned its recommendations for distributing the final $6.7M in aid to be more inclusive. The revised plan provides relief to many more active commercial fishermen, including 100% of the Cape’s eligible vessels.
Because of this tremendous effort, many more small-boat fishermen from Cape Cod and across the state have received much-needed funds to keep their businesses afloat.
“A lot of people put in a lot of time and effort to make our community’s point of view heard,” says Chatham fisherman Tim Linnell, f/v Perry’s Pride II. “We are grateful that Congressman Keating, Rep. Peake, Sen. Wolf, and the whole Cape and Islands delegation worked with us to get an outcome that helped more working fishermen.”
Once again we would like to thank everyone in our community who supported our local fleet by adding your voices to theirs. Together, we made a big a difference!
