Herring Heat Up
Herring Fishing Debate is Heating Up as Council Considers Options
The midwater trawl fleet for sea herring is too big for our coastal waters. A buffer zone can protect our local fisheries.
The Fishermen's Alliance is working hard alongside local fishermen to push for a buffer zone off the backside of Cape Cod that would prohibit industrial herring trawlers from fishing in nearshore waters. (The huge vessels can still fish farther offshore and deliver plenty of bait for the lobster fishery.)
We believe this buffer zone can protect Cape Cod fish populations and allow our small-boat fishing industry to thrive.
Stay tuned for more details on how you can help, either by writing a letter, attending a meeting or making phone calls to decision-makers.
